Ceramics

In art history, ceramics and ceramic art mean art objects such as figures, tiles, and tableware made from clay and other raw materials by the process of pottery. Some ceramic products are regarded as fine art, while others are regarded as decorative, industrial or applied art objects, or as artifacts in archaeology. They may be made by one individual or in a factory where a group of people design, make and decorate the ware. Decorative ceramics are sometimes called "art pottery".

Making Greek Vases

In ancient Greece, the phrase "to make pottery" meant to work hard. While all Greek pottery was made by similar methods, the pottery techniques of Athens are especially well understood. The typical Athenian pottery workshop was a small establishment consisting of a potter and several assistants. The potter prepared the clay, threw or formed the vases, and oversaw their firing. He may also have decorated the vases himself, or employed vase-painters to decorate his wares.

Valaria Tatera and Dan Vaughn, from Artists Working in Education (AWE), held a series of workshops with students from Lafollette School centered around Dave the Potter. The students studied Dave and his work, creating haikus based on Dave's poetry. Sixteenth and seventeenth-century European cabinets of Curiosities focused on rigorously arranging and cataloging specific types of objects, even those they did not fully understand. Loca Miraculi features some of the most important artifacts in the history of English pottery-making. Revealed in the drawers within are diverse images and objects that link the everyday ceramics on display with significant scientific discoveries, artistic endevors, and cultural trends of the last five hundred years.

The earliest museum collections, called Wunderkammern, or cabinets of curiosities, were assembled more than five hundred years ago by aristocratic Europeans who collected natural and man-made artifacts of great beauty and scientific importance.
The legacy of these early cabinets lives on at the Milwaukee Art Museum's Loca Miraculi/Rooms of Wonder. Created by Wisconsin artist Martha Glowacki and curators at the Chipstone Foundation, this imaginative installation combines historic objects with original artworks in ways that delight our eyes, awaken our minds, and stimulate our emotions.
